Why do I need Regular Dental Check-Ups?

Prevention is Better than Cure

Much like your car needs regular servicing to ensure it runs properly and small mechanical issues are identified before they turn into big ones, your teeth need regular check-ups at the dentist.

Using the car analogy, you can do everything right, use premium fuel, drive your car carefully, and yet the mechanic still finds a fault with it, and without a regular service that small fault would be left unattended and lead to a much bigger issue.

Deep Cleaning

Your dentist will use your dental check-up to look for things like cavities on and between your teeth, the presence of plaque and tartar, and anything that looks like it could affect your oral health. Your dentist will also check the health of your gums, tongue, and check your face for any swelling.

A dental check-up will usually include a professional tooth cleaning service where your dentist can remove any build up that a regular brush can’t remove.

But why do dentists need to check these things every six months?

Even the most diligent of brushers can fall victim to plaque and tartar, which eventually lead to cavities. A dental check-up can identify areas in the mouth that are missed by brushing and flossing and stop the build up of plaque. If there are areas in your mouth that are hard to brush, your dentist may need to take some corrective action to ensure they aren’t a hot bed for cavities.

Your dental check-up is a great time for your dentist to identify small issues and rectify them before they turn into much larger problems. A small amount of plaque can lead to cavities, which if left unattended can lead to tooth loss. Missing teeth can be embarrassing, but they can also be very expensive to replace.

Oral examinations can identify oral cancers, whilst this is a rare occurrence, it is important to take the time to get your oral health assessed by a professional.

Regular dental check-ups set a great example for young children, when they see their parents investing in their oral health, they will too.
